Tournaments

As you all know were going to that Bay Area open thing, so gearing up for playing in tournaments I must also run my own in the next two weeks as well which means I’m taking a look at how as a player I’m wanting to enjoy a tournament while setting one up.

First off…Kill Points Suck. It’s terrible, unfair, and stupid in any small ran tournament where strength of schedule may be based of the bloody things as they dont work properly and gimp players based of their luck of opponents. (nerd rage over)

So I’ve been designing new missions sheets (which will be available in template form after my tournament for anyone wanting to use them) which will be set up to run primary secondary and tertiary objectives, taking homage from the 3-4th ed rogue trader tournaments waky global effects will also be played as they help determine power of tactical abilities per game per general as the tournament progress.

This system will allow for Primary Objective wins to fit next to strength of schedule as place deciders with the secondary and tertiary being tie breakers. We’ll see how this works out and I can assure your will hear about how it does that weekend.

Swallowing a mouthful

Yea.

Alot’s been going on hobby wise for me recently and its time to post before I leave civilization for the next week so here we go.

Blood Angels… Yea there fucking awesome and my next project even as I still finish my DE has already been deemed to be pre heresy BA, yea were gonna enjoy this shit. Going drop heavy and wanting to have a stand in for Sanguinius as this awesome picture would like to demonstrate means the army is going to be running either the sanguinor or mephiston as its stand in, with there being heavy drop pod love for them pre-heresy armies. Most of this has come seeing this amazing image and I begun reading the Horus Heresy books as of last week.

Every time I begin reading 40k fluff I delve back into wanting to amazing armies built around fluff, forgetting about the tournament comp that might make it competitive I feel this may be one of those.

Various companies due great model pieces to create good conversions for pre heresy and forgeworld has a great line up as well. As this gets done it will be posted with bitz info and techniques to help other create Pre-Heresy stuff.

At the same time I’ve been working on painting my DE, finished the vehicles using a black/ice blue color combo that contrasts very well and use the panels to break up the flat surfaces. The metal was all painted to look like a well worn/dirty bronze which helps offset the clean edge panels without ruining the look of the model.

The infantry models have been given a similar treatment with armor sections being black and blue mixed with metal segments that follow the same look as the vehicles.

Are you one of the many lazy and untalented members of the miniature gaming community?

Then air brushes are for you my friend!

A quality air brush can offer you a kick a** looking army without all the fuss or time consuming skill development and talent!

Seriously guys I have one and I can base and double highlight thirty twenty-five milimeter infantry models in about thirty to forty-five minutes and that is including the three smoke breaks I take, two for color changes and one because I can. They are also fantastic for painting vehicles and you can do a lot of cool things with just an airbrush, a few different paint colors, and an index card. I would say that my airbrush is my best friend as a miniature gamer but my left hand may have something to say about that. I would highly recommend you use your interwebs and google something like “how to paint space marines airbrush” and see for yourself the awesomeness you yourself could posses. You just have to know a few things before you start watching videos and getting way to ahead of yourself.

Unfortunately some skill and intelligence are still required for detail work and using an airbrush to paint the majority of your army and it does limit your theme selection to generic solid color schemes. But if you are worried about that kind of thing then you should either already be a proficient hobbyist or pull your head out of your a** and get back to reality. They are also rather expensive as you not only require and airbrush but also and air-compressor with at least a five gallon tank.

Another thing that should be noted about online painting tutorials is that they are guides. I meet a lot of people who have seen someone who is really talented paint something on the internet and then get it in there head that there is no other way to paint of model in that fashion. You have to work with what is available to you, and the talents you posses. If you see someone paint a kick ass model with an airbrush or just by hand but can’t afford or simply don’t have access to things like mixing pots, isopropyl alcohol(rubbing alcohol), makeup brushes, model air primer, weathering kits and so on then take what you can from that video and then use this knowledge to develop and improve your own methods of painting your army.

Well that is pretty much it for now I just wanted to get a post up on the 6+ to show that I am alive and full of shi*.

Show em whats good nerds and keep your chins up and your feet on the ground.

What you know about the 41st millennium?

Short answer: not very much.

Ok so let’s be honest here. Most of the internet is bad at playing 40k and making lists. I’m not going to qualify that statement with any hard facts but it’s true. Recent discussion has revealed that some cool dudes still exit out there, but the vast majority of manchildren on 40k message boards like Whineseer Warseer and Dakka don’t do much but pretend to know competitive play (both are great forums with bad tactics communities).

If you ask for list advice at any wargaming message board, you’re going to get the same advice for every single army. You’ll rarely like the advice and when you change your army up and play with it, chances are it won’t perform like those cool e-bros said it would. And that’ll make you goddamned sad.

So because I’m at work and need to get this post done as quickly as possible, I’m just going to segue right into a list of my own that was poorly received over at Warseer. It’ll seem like I’m whining about people not liking it, but don’t worry — I’m not. My list rips shit UP, motherfucker. And it’s flavorful to a theme I was going for (an Imperial Fists siege beachhead force). Here’s something that was told to me. I honestly think he was counter-trolling:

You may have wins against your friends or even at local stores but at a proper Tourney you will be beaten, soundly and consistantly.

Firstly, learn to spell goddamned “consistently.” Holy fuck. If you want to be taken seriously don’t make yourself look like a rube. But that’s not what this post is about. This post is about army lists.

I beat my friends. I beat neckbeards like that guy that aren’t my friends. I play at a competitive store that hosts some of Southern California’s most competitive gamers and I fare very well — I’m not going to say I win every game but I don’t get “beaten, soundly and consistantly.” I think he was just mad because I was trolling so hard.

Now that I’ve written a bit of nerdrage, let me spin back around to the point: people on the internet are fucking stupid (especially this guy) so don’t listen to them for tactics advice. I’m not saying you shouldn’t observe the entire field and study what people think works — that is probably the best thing you can do to get better — but you should also make your own determinations about what’s good and what’s competitive.

The reason “top lists” like leafblower and stupid longfangs dudes and CAN I HAS RAZORBACK Blood Angels are so prevalent is because people are too spineless to come up with their own sort of amazing and need to feed off of something a better general did. Just remember this: statistics are stupid, mathhammer is stupid and whatever some dumb bitch on the internet tells you about your list is probably stupid.

So get out there and make the next best netlist rather than copying all of the derpy ones out there. I think you can do it.

Fighting the darkness with a flashlight

Well now that The 6+ Save is up and going I’m feeling rather hasty about posting something of meat. It’s seems I’m gonna be the only dork to run around with my name open to the world, so indeed I am Kenny Heater, a twenty something college student who has way to much free time and a hobby in which he strains his love/hate relationship with. This is my testimony.

My humble beginnings with Warhammer 40k stemmed from being a young nerd in love with video games and the such, Warhammer 40k eventually found it’s way to me, as a young teen I frequented my local game store at the time, one such called Game Cove, where I learned the secret ways of playing with toy soldiers of the future and their bitter struggle to always roll higher dice than the opponent. To say the least I was hooked at first seeing a hobby that was loved by others and second by knowing that my army would be “MY” army it would have my flavor something that no one else would have.

To say the least I bought what I could from my parents allowance at the time and began playing Imperial Guard, these poor men had no power armor, no super reflexes, no they had flashlights and they would fight the darkness with it no matter what and I too would join them in their eternal struggle. My first few months was just trying to get my army together and learning the game much better so I came by and watched often during tournaments and open play days. (BTW during this time some business junky came by and bought Game Cove and had it moved to a better location and renamed it, Pair A Dice Games ) To say the least I fought the tide of terrible that I was with my Guard at first untill I was decent eventually when I got my first job I began buying another army. Thus the Anime Space Commies that the Tau are became my next victim.

Buying Tau was only the first step I took as I descended into madness, eventually buying and playing Orks, Grey Knights, Space Marines, Chaos Daemons, Tau Again, Guard Again, Flesh Tearers and now my newest victim is Dark Eldar. As the armies passed so did life and when I hit college I began working at this store that had consumed my pay check, where I do so to this day as the Event Coordinator.

My play style is always how I want to play and what is most fun for me, no one can tell me different but I do take suggestion and I will continue on this way as well. Look in the coming weeks for my all female Dark Eldar army and it’s in progress and finished shots for an upcoming tournament.
